Day 1: CUSCO - CHIKISCCA
We depart from Cusco between 4:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. in our private transportation and head towards Cachora, an Andean community located 4-5 hours away from Cusco at 2800 m/9184 ft, which is the starting point of the hike. Here, we meet our horsemen and horses. We begin our hike by ascending for two and a half hours to the Capuliyoc pass at 2750 m/9020 ft, where we can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the Apurimac River Canyon. We continue descending for two more hours to Chikiscca (Chiquisca), where we set up our camp and spend the night.
Day 2: CHIKISCCA - CHOQUEQUIRAO
We leave Chikiscca (Chiquisca) at 6:00 a.m. heading towards Playa Rosalina, which takes approximately one hour. We then cross the Apurimac River and begin the ascent towards Santa Rosa, zigzagging up a steep slope. This ascent takes about 2 hours, and it's important to start early to avoid the heat making the hike more challenging than it should be. In Santa Rosa, we have a 30-minute rest where those who wish can try Cambray, a local sugarcane extract. Afterward, we continue our hike, slowly ascending for two and a half hours until we reach our lunch spot in Marampata. From here, we walk for another two hours to reach the Choquequirao archaeological complex located at 3103 m/10178 ft, where we set up camp, have free time to enjoy and explore the terraces and buildings.
Day 3: CHOQUEQUIRAO TO PLAYA ROSALINA
This morning, we will enjoy a guided visit of the Choquequirao complex: we will visit the upper part (Hanan), the lower parts (Urin), and some areas still covered in wild foliage, ready to be restored to their original form during the Inca times. After visiting the archaeological site, we begin our hike back towards Santa Rosa, where we have lunch. We continue descending for another 2 hours until we reach Playa Rosalina at 1450 m/4756 ft, where we camp and have dinner.
Day 4: PLAYA ROSALINA TO CACHORA
We leave the campsite after breakfast to begin the ascent of two to three hours to CHIKISCCA (Chiquisca), and then make our way back to the Capuliyoc pass, where we have our lunch. In the afternoon, we continue our 2-hour return journey to Cachora, where a private transportation will be waiting to take us back to Cusco.
